What to expect from a safety gap audit

What a safety gap audit can review, what to prepare and how to turn findings into a practical improvement plan.

Start with a clear question

A safety gap audit helps you understand the difference between your current arrangements and the expectations agreed for the review. It is most useful when you begin with a clear question: where do we need support, what has changed, or which parts of our system need closer attention? Agree the scope before the audit starts so everyone understands what will be examined.

Bring the current picture together

Useful information can include your safety management arrangements, training records, risk assessments, RAMS and findings from earlier reviews. Share the versions your teams actually use. Explain where information is incomplete and where work has changed. The purpose is to understand the real position, including the gaps.

Look beyond the document list

A folder of documents does not, by itself, explain how work is managed. A review may also need input from the people responsible for the activities and, where included in scope, an examination of workplace conditions. Discuss how procedures are communicated, who owns actions and what happens when circumstances change.

Turn findings into a manageable plan

After the review, agree which findings need attention and why. Give each action an owner and an appropriate timescale. Separate actions your team can complete from those that need specialist input. Check progress against the actual improvement required, rather than simply marking a document as updated.

Connect the next steps

Training needs identified through a review can inform onsite support or relevant learning from Safetyman Academy. If you are considering the wider Safetyman offering, explore the Sentinel suite and discuss which capabilities match your requirements. Product access and inclusions should be confirmed separately.

When ongoing support makes sense

If the audit reveals a continuing workload, Safetyman 365 provides a route to an agreed monthly or annual consultant partnership. You can also commission a defined audit or inspection. The right next step depends on the operation and the scope of work—not simply the length of the findings list.

This article provides general discussion points. Support should be scoped around your activities, location and circumstances.
